Lost T.V. Show Review + 5 T.V. Recommendations

Unlike most people I didn't watch Lost with my group of friends every week waiting to see what would happen next.  I started watching Lost on a cold snowy January morning with my husband.  We were both snowed in and weren't able to leave the house. As we were trying to figure out what to watch on Netflix and being consumed by so many options I remembered both of my sisters telling me how much they loved the show Lost.  I asked my husband Jon if he had seen it and  I was surprised when he told me no but that he was interested in watching the show.

I remember watching the commercial promoting the pilot episode and thinking to myself "Is this a show my parents would let me watch?" A show about a plane crash and being left destitute on a deserted island.  I really wanted to watch the show when it came out in 2004 but I was only a Sophomore in highschool.  Growing up in a conservative house I wasn't allowed to have a t.v. in my bedroom.  Everything I wanted to watch had to be in the family room.  I was worried this show wouldn't be approved by my parents.  At this time I also had just gotten my drivers licence so honestly being home wasn't exactly where I wanted to be.  I wanted to be with my friends.

From the very first moments, my husband and I were hooked. The first episode seemed to go by so fast.  We watched season one in less than two days.   For the next three days we did nothing but binge watch Lost and tried to figure out what was going on in the midst of all the craziness.  The chaos of the plane crash, the immediate human drama, and the slow reveal of the island's bizarre nature created an atmosphere of pure mystery. I wasn't just watching characters try to survive.

As the series progressed, the incredible unfolding of the characters and their development over time was amazing.   I became deeply invested in their stories, their flaws, and their hidden pasts. The writers made me care about every single person on that beach, and that emotional connection was the true anchor of the series.

Earlier this year I became very ill and had two surgries within a month of each other.  Having quite a bit of alone time I decided to rewatch Lost.  Even though I fell in love with the characters the first time I felt as if the ending was very confusing.  That the writers couldn't figure out how to end the show.  One day I was explaining this my older sister Kara and she recommended that I rewatch the show, but I should watch the show as if it had three different endings.  She told me the her second time watching Lost was her favorite.  With a lot of down time I decided to give her theory a try.  BTW she was right.  However, being my older sister she usually is right on a lot of things.

Of course, the show’s mythology is what kept me wanting to watch more and more. The Dharma Initiative, the Others, the time travel—each new layer added more questions than it answered. Was the Smoke Monster good or evil? What was in the hatch? Was the island a character itself? The show was a brilliant puzzle.  The journey of trying to solve it was the most rewarding part.  Watching the show for the second time I was able to pick up pieces and clues that I missed the first time. The finale, while controversial, felt like a beautiful and emotional conclusion to the characters' stories.

Lost was a show that demanded my full attention and rewarded me with unforgettable characters and a story that was unlike anything else on television. It wasn’t just a show; it was an emersive experience from beginning to end, and I'm so glad I got to be a part of it.

If you enjoyed watching Lost and are looking for similar shows, view the list below of some of my favorite shows in this category.

1) Fringe (2008) 5 Seasons also directed by J.J. Abrams

2) The 100 (2014) 6 Seasons.  If your looking for a show that centers more around teenagers.

3) Prison Break (2005) Multiple seasons broken up over the years.

4) The OA ( 2016) An amazing show that I couldn't stop watching.  However, in true Netflix form series was not fully completed and left a small cliffhanger.  Still worth watching.

5) Heroes (2006) If your interest in more superhero type shows.  Still different than most superhero shows and has a great cast lineup.
